Information

Background

In 2012, Cork Barrack Street Band & Music Generation Cork City, working in partnership created the Primary School Band Programme.

This partnership combined the band’s  long standing tradition with a new vision providing children in six local schools with access to performance-based community music education through the Barrack Street Band.

Programme

Places on the band programme are initially offered to children in Fourth Class, Year 1 of the programme, in order to establish interest.
 
Further opportunities for children to continue and progress are available in Year 2 in Fifth Class and Year 3 in Sixth Class, providing children with a strong musical foundation at the end of their primary school cycle.

The programme consists of 2 parts that include both after-school band rehearsals and in-school music lessons.

This provides children with an all-round, well-grounded experience.

Part 1 of the programme in Year 1 provides children in Fourth Class with the opportunity to commence music lessons during the school day in September on one of the following brass or wind instruments: flute, clarinet, saxophone, cornet, French horn, trombone, and baritone, depending on which school they attend.
 
Children who are offered a place on the band programme will receive an instrument on loan from the Barrack Street Band in partnership with Music Generation Cork City.
 

Instrumental lessons will take place during the school day, once a week.

The lessons are conducted in small groups, during which children will learn to both play their instruments and learn to read music.

Part 2 of the programme in Year 1 commences in January for Fourth Class children. Once they have progressed sufficiently on their instruments, they are given a place in the Barrack Street Training Band, which rehearses weekly.
 

Rehearsals for Training Band are held after-school in Coláiste Eamon Rís Secondary School on Tuesday evenings from 4pm to 5pm.

At band rehearsals, students will have the opportunity to further develop their instrumental skills, play music with students from other schools, and learn to be part of a concert band that plays styles of music, both modern and classical.
 

The combined approach leads to confidence building public performances where children have the opportunity to display their musical talents and be part of the social and cultural fabric of their community.

Both the in-school music lessons and after-school band rehearsals are delivered by a team of highly qualified, professional musicians. If your child is interested in participating in this music programme and would like to try out some of the instruments, please complete the Expression of Interest form below / forms are also available in the schools listed below.

Please note that due to limited resources, places on the programme are limited and are only available to children who are both interested and available to participate in both the after-school band rehearsals and in-school music lessons.
 
In the event of children not participating in both areas of the programme, they must return the instrument to the instrumental tutor, who will then offer a place on the programme to another child.

Please note nominal lesson fees may apply depending on which school your child is attending.

Any nominal fees that may apply (if any) are set by the school and collected by the school directly from parents.
